TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida Realtors, the state’s largest trade association that has worked to meet the needs of the real estate community and Florida homeowners for over 100 years, has announced that June is officially National Homeownership Month across the United States. This designation notes the importance of owning a home and how it contributes to the economic health of the nation, as well as local communities.

June 2023 represents the 21st anniversary of National Homeownership Month – which was first proclaimed in 2002 by then-President George W. Bush – according to Florida Realtors President G. Mike McGraw.

“Buying a home is often the biggest financial investment of a lifetime…but it also means so much more,” he said. “Our homes are where we share our lives, build our futures together and make priceless memories. Not only do our homes provide shelter, security and stability, they also give us a sense of place and community. Each and every day, Realtors in Florida promote housing opportunities and help people realize the American dream of homeownership.”

For generations, home ownership has been the dream of Americans across the country, and has provided a gateway to numerous emotional and social benefits; in addition, owning a home is a valuable asset that can help to build wealth, with the net worth of the average homeowner in 2021 being $300,000, 40 times higher of the net worth of the average renter during that time period, which was just $8,000.

To mark the occasion of National Homeownership Month, President Joe Biden issued an official proclamation, highlighting the importance of owning home to the economy and stressing the need to expand the opportunities for those dreaming of owning a house of their own going forward.

During National Homeownership Month, we recognize the power of owning a home when raising a family, planting roots in a community, building equity and passing down generational wealth to continue the American Dream for generations to come,” the proclamation stated. “We recognize that a place to call home, regardless of owning or renting, is essential to a life of security, dignity and hope.”

The home ownership rate in Florida in the first quarter of 2023 was 56.6 percent, according to the U.S. Census Bureau; during the same period of time, the national rate was 66 percent.
